Home Routes- Meaghan Blanchard Meaghan Blanchard will be in concert at the Old Courthouse Gallery on Wednesday February 6th! Come check out the community Art Show and enjoy a great evening of live music.       Purchase your tickets early to ensure your spot for this wonderful event! Tickets are for sale at the Courthouse Gallery and Brambles Bakery. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Tickets are $20. All money goes to the artist.       Meaghan Blanchard is a two time ECMA award winning songwriter from Prince Edward Island, Canada. She is a gifted guitarist, with her own blend of claw hammer/finger picking style, and she pairs that with a crystal pure voice and a unique ability to write and tell stories through charming character driven songs. “THE GREAT ESCAPE” is Meaghan Blanchard’s fourth album, to be released in June 2018. The songs are strong, at times deeply personal, and sown throughout are the narratives of men and women who have rumbled with profound universal themes: self-doubt, fear and hope for a better way of living. "The Great Escape" was produced by Jim Bryson at Fixed Hinge Studio in Stitsville, Ontario CANADA. “Meaghan is truly an artist with a vision of how to use her wonderful voice and pair it up with songs that truly move you as a listener.” (Maverick, UK )       Show starts at 7pm. Doors open at 6:00pm.         LIVE VIDEO LINKS:   THE GREAT ESCAPE: Barbershop Sessions 2017       FAR TOO LONG: Showcase PEI 2017        ANGELINA BRIDGETTE: Showcase PEI 2017

Christmas Bird Count

Nicola Naturalists to run 20th Merritt Christmas Bird Count

On Sunday 16th December local naturalists will participate in one of the biggest and longest-running wildlife surveys in the world. The annual Christmas Bird Count has been running for 119 years across North America. The count was first held in Merritt in 1995 and this season marks the 20th count.

Organized by the Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada, the Christmas Bird Count is the longest-running wildlife database in the world largest. Every Christmas season counts take place in over 2,000 count circles across North America and in other parts of the world. Each Christmas over 10,000 Canadians participate in almost 500 counts and tally over 3 million birds including more than 300 species. The data collected in these counts has proved extremely valuable in tracking changes in the distribution and abundance of bird populations. For example, many studies using Christmas Bird Count data show the effects of climate change on birds and natural ecosystems.

Although there is a serious side to the counts, the main goal is to have fun and enjoy local nature. The Nicola Naturalist Society organizes the Merritt bird count. Groups of birders travel about within the designated count circle and record the species and numbers of all birds. You don’t have to be an expert to participate and it’s a great way to learn about the local birds. Beginner birders are welcome.
